Summer Camp
Tuesday August 12 - Sunday August 17, 2008
Wellspring Renewal Center
Philo, California
Navarro River String Camp provides an opportunity for beginning
and intermediate adult string players (violin, viola, and
cello) to enjoy an intensive musical retreat in the redwoods
of Mendocino County. If you have an interest in playing with
others and want to gain ensemble experience, this is the
camp for you! Our group will number approximately 32, and
participants will spend time rehearsing both coached and
uncoached in several different assigned groups. Music for
some of these groups will be mailed out in advance. There
will be evening concerts by guest musicians, chamber music
jams with the coaches, daily stretching and classes developing
relaxation in performance, and numerous activities strengthening
rhythmic, intonation, sight-reading, and improvising skills.
Time is available for walks and swimming in the river. The
coaches for this workshop are Marcia Sloane, Marion
Crombie and Abigail Summers.
The background playing experience of Navarro River string
campers is varied. Participants are generally working with
their own teacher and most have been playing for at least
a year. Some started later in life and have no previous
musical experience; others played as kids, have given it
up, and are coming back after a long break. Some play in
chamber groups regularly throughout the year and others do
not. Our goal at camp is to create chamber groups whose
members feel musically compatible, and towards this end we
like to contact the teachers of first-time participants to
get an idea of their skills. If your chamber group
from home wants to come to camp you can sign-up as a pre-formed
ensemble for one of your assigned groups.
This summer, based on space available, we plan to offer
string camp "overnights" for those who can stay one or two
nights but not for the full five days. Email or call in June

What Participants Say About Navarro River String Camp:
"I liked the music choices
and having the music ahead of time."
"The classes were great - I'm sorry I missed the
breathing one. Theory might even be sinking in."
"I loved how supportive you all were in our attempts
to stretch into better playing."
"The concerts were a gift- it's great to watch
music happen at such close range".
"Our concluding performance was the most fun, agonizing,
but fun."
"All the activities were
educational and helpful. I particularly liked working on
the chorales, and feel like I benefited a great deal from
them."
"The workshop was terrific! I learned a lot, played a lot, was challenged, enjoyed all the music & classes, and just had a wonderful time."
"I was moved witnessing adults who consciously
chose to take on the vulnerable role of beginner/student/performer
at a time in their life when that’s not expected
of them — very brave — a powerful act of connecting
through music to self and others. You create the nurturing
musical environment for this connection to take place."
"This string camp was about music, but it was also
about being with people and sharing time together."
Faculty:
Marion Crombie was
born in England, and received her training on the viola at
the Robert Schumann Konservatorium in Dusseldorf, and at
the Royal College of Music in London. She has been teaching
since 1972, combining this with playing in various orchestras
and chamber ensembles and raising three children. She moved
to California in 1993 and continues to combine freelance
playing with teaching. One of her passions is to introduce
students to the joy of playing in groups, and this has led
to the formation of the Jughandle Summer String camp and
the Redwood Youth Orchestra. Both of these groups serve the
youth of Mendocino County, and so it is especially satisfying
to also be able to offer Navarro River String Camp for adults.
Marcia Sloane began
playing cello at age nine in Honolulu, Hawaii. She studied
cello with Margaret Rowell at Stanford and received her B.
A. in India Studies from Sonoma State University singing
north Indian classical style with Laxmi G. Tewari. She is
an orchestral and chamber player and has performed in a variety
of musical genres including the Don Ho Show in Waikiki, Ancient
Future in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Caravan Stage Company
in Ontario, Canada, and collaborative projects involving
composition and improvisation with visual art, theatre, storytelling,
and dance. Her works have been performed at the New Directions
Cello Festival and Mendocino Music Festival and she has produced
two CDs. Skyward, a collection
of songs and instrumental compositions with cello, voice,
and various instruments, was featured on National Public
Radio's online music program Open Mic. Cello
Drones for Tuning and Improvisation — and Marcia's
teaching approach using drones—were the subject of an article
in Strings Magazine. Marcia maintains a cello studio in Mendocino,
California, and is also a Ta Ke Ti Na teacher, facilitating
a group rhythm process using the body as a musical instrument.
Abigail Summers grew
up in the English countryside, playing piano and cello from
an early age. She studied performance at the Royal College
of Music in London and while there took an interest in the
Baroque cello and viola da gamba.Since moving to California
in 1988, Abigail has performed in various chamber and orchestral
ensembles in Mendocino, Lake, and Sonoma counties. A private
piano and cello instructor for over 20 years, Abigail has
taught string classes at the Waldorf School of Mendocino
County for the past 5 years. She conducts the Inland Youth
String Ensemble and is cello coach for the Redwood Youth
Orchestra. After suffering from 'backache' during her teens,
Abigail found relief from attending Iyengar Yoga classes
in London whilst in College. For the past 20 years she has
been a student of Mary Paffard at Yoga Mendocino (Y.O.M.O.)
in Ukiah and last year she completed a teacher-training there. |
