Thunder Shower
quartet for flute, violin, viola, and cello

“Thunder Shower” is in 9/8 time, divided 2 + 2 + 3 + 2 and defined by pizzicato in the cello, with several short sections in 4/4. After an espressivo introduction by the viola, the flute and violin enter in octave unison with a slow melody, free-flowing over the barline, accompanied by the cello pizzicato. On the repeat of this melody, the viola enters with a contrasting melody in rhythmic alignment with the cello pizzicato. A section in 4/4 with solo flute and arco accompaniment in the strings hearkens to the melody of the viola introduction. Viola then pairs with violin for the slow melody and flute takes the faster melody, cello holding down the rhythmic ostinato in 9/8 throughout. The piece concludes with fading rhythmic pizzicato in the strings. Duration of the piece is 6 minutes. The notes aren't so difficult, but the rhythms can be tricky.
